Marvel’s ‘THE DEFENDERS’ Nabs ‘DAREDEVIL’ Season 2 Showrunners!

If you’ve managed to check out either season of DAREDEVIL, or the first season of JESSICA JONES, you’ll know that Marvel is really doing the Lord’s work on Netflix. Where the Marvel movies in theaters tend to be big, fun, and family friendly, their Netflix shows are smaller in scale, and darker in tone. But that doesn’t mean they’re any less ambitious than their cinematic counterparts.

Ever since Daredevil first took to the streets of Hell’s Kitchen last year, Marvel Entertainment knew they’d want to cross him over with three other street-level Marvel characters: Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. Like in THE AVENGERS before them, THE DEFENDERS will likely pit these four superheroes against some force or villain that none of them could handle on their own.

It’s definitely a great idea, but like with any comic book property, there is always room for things to go wrong. It’s difficult to juggle multiple stories, especially since each of the characters is a lead in their own right — and they’ll each have their own respective Netflix series to prove it.

Marvel has officially taken the first big step in the right direction in announcing the showrunners for the DEFENDERS series. In a brilliant move, they’ve tapped Douglas Petrie and Marco Ramirez, both of whom are hot off the second season of DAREDEVIL, which has received both fan and critical praise.

“This is the big one,” said showrunners and Executive Producers Douglas Petrie and Marco Ramirez. “Four amazing casts, four amazing series, now all in one amazing story. We are thrilled at the opportunity to deliver the show that both we and the fans have been waiting for.”

But that isn’t all, it looks like Marvel has also brought Drew Goddard onto the series as executive producer. This is great news, as Goddard is the man who created the DAREDEVIL series to begin with, so his input will be invaluable.

Cindy Holland, Netflix Vice President of Original Content, had the following to say regarding the announcement.

“Doug and Marco captivated our members around the world with their continuation of the story of Matt Murdock in MARVEL’S DAREDEVIL, and we can’t wait to see how they and Drew will introduce the full Defenders team to our global audience.”

Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television, said:

“We’re incredibly excited to be able to bring our four street level heroes together in an epic tale woven by Doug and Marco whose work on ‘Marvel’s Daredevil’ speaks for itself. They write and produce not only great action and adventure, but also the heart and touch ofhumor that’s makes us Marvel. With the inclusion of Drew Goddard, we’ve got a team that’s as formidable as the Defenders themselves.”
