Therefore, Light SPOILER Warning For The Batman Below!

Matt Reeves Debunks Robin Fan Theory - However Admits He May Steal It For Sequels

There is a fan theory going about that the son of the murdered Mayor in The Batman might be getting set up as a future Robin. I won’t get into too many spoilers here, but the Mayor’s death is the catalyst for the whole movie. The Mayor’s unnamed son whilst not a major part, does show up a few times and Bruce Wayne seems to take an interest in him. In the context of the movie it’s pretty easy to see why Bruce would feel a connection to the son of a murdered father. However could that be how Robin comes into this Batverse eventually? It might, but if it does it’s not because director Matt Reeves wrote it that way.

As you’ll see from the interview posted by ReelBlend below, Reeves says that was never the intention. However Reeves also says that’s a really good idea, and that he might steal it. Reeves could just be joking of course, and probably is. However he does seem to genuinely like the idea despite admitting he never came up with it.

Interesting to be sure. I’m not going to lie, but after watching the movie last night, my son and I discussed this very prospect on the car drive home. However, for me, I personally want a more comic accurate origin. I’d want Dick to be a little older and already have that acrobatic experience of working in the circus. Dick could be another boy in a similar situation to the Mayor’s son, but this time Batman decides to do things differently. After all, Dick is pretty much left with nothing. Whereas the Mayor’s son still has his mother, the house, and all their ill gotten gains.

Actually a better use for this kid in my opinion would be as an origin point for the likes of Black Mask or even Hush. However I also think the kid is simply too young for that to really bear fruit in a believable way. I do very much doubt that Matt Reeves will decide to make this kid Robin, but hey, you never know do you? As you’ll see from the related article above though, it seems Reeves hasn’t yet decided whether Robin will be in this story in the future?

What do you think of his comments as Matt Reeves debunks Robin fan theory? Thoughts below as always.
