Matt Reeves’ The Batman Adds Rogue One Cinematographer Greig Fraser

Things seem to be moving along much more quickly with Matt Reeves’ upcoming Batman movie, which probably won’t be called The Batman. With a script seemingly ready, a release date locked, a lead actor in place, and maybe even the hints of a composer, The Batman has now added its cinematographer.

THR has reports that Rogue One cinematographer Greig Fraser has signed on to Matt Reeves’ movie. The pair worked together on Let Me In, and Fraser is currently providing his talents to Denis Villeneuve’s Dune movie. After Dune is completed Fraser will bein working with Reeves again on his Batman movie, starring Robert Pattinson.

“It’s great to be working with Matt again,” Fraser said Wednesday in a statement to THR. “The Batman franchise is iconic and it’s a privilege to now be able to visualize it in my own way. Especially with the cumulative creative potential of all the talent and technicians we have in front of and behind the camera.”

Fraser’s other credits include Zero Dark Thirty, Vice, and Foxcatcher, however the work of his I was personally most impressed with was Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. I thought when it released that Rogue One was the best looking Star Wars film ever, even more impressive visually to me than The Force Awakens, though despite my criticisms of the story I must admit The Last Jedi was every bit as well shot as Rogue One.

I loved some of the shots Fraser pulled off in Rogue One, which helped to set it tonally on a slightly darker path from other Star Wars movies. I am hoping he can bring that kind of talent and tone to this new Batman movie, after all, Batman and Gotham city has to be a dream job for any serious cinematographer to get his teeth into.

Reeves’ The Batman is due for release on June 25th, 2021 and could begin filming as early as December this year according to the rumor mill. Are you excited to see Fraser get this gig, are you a fan of his work on Rogue One like me? Sound off in the usual spot below.
