Matt Smukler made his feature film directorial debut during the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this year with Wildflower. A story inspired by his niece who had to wear adult pants at a very early age.
The Synopsis
Inspired by a true story, Wildflower is a coming-of-age film that follows Bea Johnson (Kiernan Shipka, “Carriers”) from birth to graduation as she navigates life with two neurodivergent parents and an extended family who can’t quite agree on the best way to help.
The producer, writer and director started his filmmaking career with short films like The Hiccup, The Mrs., and The Wake Up Call. Then in 2022 there was Wildflower, the documentary. The film won Best Documentary during the Nashville Film Festival of that same year.

was connected with Matt Smuckler via Zoom last week to discuss the making of Wildflower. He discussed how he got a high caliber cast and made this film different from the documentary. As well as some of the changes he felt he needed to make from the real life story, the music that his daughter took part in and more!
Wildflower is available in select theaters March 17, 2023 and On Digital March 21, 2023.
