A few years ago, it seemed like YA adaptations had taken over the world. The Hunger Games had started a trend that pitted a bunch of fit teens against some post-apocalyptic force. We saw this manifest in such other film franchises like Divergent, The 5th Wave, and Maze Runner.
While this trend came and went a lot quicker than expected, Maze Runner is the one lingering franchise still carrying over from that era. Maze Runner: The Death Cure was originally slated to hit theaters this past February, but thanks to an on-set injury that star Dylan O’Brien suffered, they had to push it back.
As a result, we’re now just getting our first real look at what to expect, and it seems to be chock-full of action. The official synopsis to the film is below:
“In the epic finale to the Maze Runner saga, Thomas leads his group of escaped Gladers on their final and most dangerous mission yet. To save their friends, they must break into the legendary Last City, a WCKD-controlled labyrinth that may turn out to be the deadliest maze of all. Anyone who makes it out alive will get answers to the questions the Gladers have been asking since they first arrived in the maze.”
Personally, I’m on the fence on this one. The trailer does look promising, but the last film, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials didn’t do it any favors. While the first film was a surprisingly strong, albeit predictable story, The Scorch Trials was a sort of dull, slow-moving follow-up that took the wind out of the sails in terms of my own enthusiasm. At the end of it all, I still cared very little for these characters, and that certainly affected my own enjoyment.
We’re certainly hoping this next entry is an improvement, but its actual release date of January 26, 2018 is worth discussing. In the past, January has been a place where studios send their bad films to die quick deaths at the box office. With that in mind, we can’t help but wonder what this January release date means. But that’s a rule that’s largely only applied as of a couple years ago. More recently, big studios have pushed up their tentpole films earlier and earlier. Looking at the schedule for 2018, Black Panther is slated for February, and A Wrinkle in Time and Tomb Raider are slated for March. As such, it may just be a case of the studio trying to find a weekend that isn’t surrounded by other tentpoles, so we may be worrying about nothing here.
