It’s always great when a director finds their “actor muse,” or vice versa. Martin Scorsese has Leonardo DiCaprio, Nolan works with Tom Hardy more and more, Tarantino uses Christoph Waltz as much as Waltz’s busy schedule allows, and Spielberg recently started including Mark Rylance in nearly every film. And of course, you have Johnny Depp and Tim Burton, though at this point, that relationship seems more like a loveless marriage than a solid actor/director collaborative process (so, it’s not always great). Though none of these actors work exclusively with these directors and these directors don’t include the actors in every film, all undoubtedly have a working relationship that both find beneficial for their creative process.
If these two didn’t belong on such a list before, they certainly do now; actor Michael B. Jordan and director Ryan Cooglar. Jordan has appeared in Cooglar’s Fruitvale Station, Creed, and the upcoming Black Panther from Marvel Studios. That’s every feature Cooglar has directed!
Well, the magic won’t stop there, as Deadline reports that Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler are reuniting for Cooglar’s first post-Black Panther film, Wrong Answer.
Wrong Answer tells the story of the 2006 standardized test cheating scandal at Atlanta public schools. Jordan is past the playing students phase of his career, as he will portray teacher Damany Lewis, who joined in the cheating in order to prevent his school from shutting down under pressures of the No Child Left Behind law. The script is based on a 2014 article from The New Yorker, by Rachel Aviv.
How long will this actor/director relationship last? It’s hard to say, but these streaks become harder and harder to schedule and maintain as both Cooglar and Jordan move onto more projects the size of Black Panther, with many more moving parts and more studio involvement in casting.
