It was only a week ago when we reported that Sony pulled out of Michael Peña’s horror-thriller The Bringing, but some fresh news means that we shouldn’t feel too bad for the actor. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Peña has just been added to the cast of Ava DuVernay’s A Wrinkle In Time.
Peña has signed on for A Wrinkle In Time, which is expected to continue DuVernay’s hot streak. The Selma director followed up that Martin Luther King Jr. biopic with a hit TV series (Queen Sugar), a riveting documentary (13th), and hopes to add to her streak with A Wrinkle In Time. Based on the children’s book of the same by Madeline L’Engle, the sci-fi fantasy has the potential to be a bit of a mind-bending hit for Disney.
The central plot of A Wrinkle In Time finds two siblings reeling from the loss of their scientist father (Chris Pine), who somehow end up in another realm on a quest to find him. Along the way, they’re helped by fantastical, supernatural characters named Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon), Mrs. Who (Mindy Kaling), and Mrs. Which (Oprah Winfrey).
A Wrinkle In Time began filming this week and, as you can see, it’s got quite a cast. Peña is known for films like Ant-Man, End of Watch, Crash, and Fury.
I don’t know why, and I should preface this by saying that I’ve never read the book, but A Wrinkle In Time sounds like it could be something along the lines of What Dreams May Come with a hint of Labyrinth and Neverending Story children’s fantasy mixed in.
If you’ve read the book, feel free to tell me how wrong or how right I am about that.
