Mission: Impossible 6, the follow up to Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, is now filming. Tom Cruise is back (of course), as is Christopher McQuarrie, who wrote and directed Rogue Nation, the best entry in the franchise since the original 1996 film. Also returning are Rebecca Ferguson as Isla Faust, Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn, Alec Baldwin as Alan Hunley, Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell, and the terrifying Sean Harris as the even more terrifying Soloman Lane. Henry Cavill also has a substantial role in the film.
Today, Christopher McQuarie took to Instagram to confirm we’ll be seeing another familiar face come release date. Michelle Monaghan, who we haven’t seen since Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, and hasn’t had a line of dialogue since M:I:III, will return as Ethan Hunt’s wife, Julia in Mission: Impossible 6.
Ethan Hunt (Cruise) married Julia in the first act of M:I:III, making her the ideal target for a kidnapping before the credits rolled. Julia was absent and presumed dead until the end of Ghost Protocol, where it was revealed Ethan must keep his distance from his wife to ensure her safety. Then, in Rogue Nation, there was no sign of Julia, while Ethan got to flirt with his professional equal, Agent Isla Faust. Though their relationship was mostly professional, her inclusion and the absence of Julia seemed like a new direction for the franchise; perhaps an attempt to not have Ethan tied down and unable to serve the IMF. One wonders if Julia was brought back to again be the damsel in distress (though she did hold her own in M:I:III, when the going got rough), but hopes this is not actually the direction the filmmakers take her character.
If you are interested in any sort of Mission: Impossible 6 update, I recommend following McQuarrie on Instagram, as it is also where he first announced the involvement of Cavill and regularly posts pictures of locations and behind-the-scenes action.
