Not all the news today needs to be Star Wars news!
Why should Marvel Studios have all the fun? In addition to Sony’s Venom standalone film and possible VenomVerse, the studio has been developing an Untitled Animated Spider-Man Feature for theatrical release. The film is likely not connected to the live-action universe and will center around the Miles Morales version of Spider-Man, rather than Peter Parker.
In Marvel’s Ultimate Comics line of titles, Peter Parker was killed and that very same week Morales was bitten by a radioactive spider that hitched a ride in his uncle’s bag when his uncle robbed Oscorp (he’s no uncle Ben). Morales went on to assume the role of Spider-Man in Parker’s place, complete with his own unique suit and a few powers the original Spider-Man didn’t posses. It is this version of the character that Sony is bringing to life, and they’ve just cast two great actors in the project.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that Shameik Moore, from Netflix’s The Get Down and the excellent movie Dope, is your new Miles Morales! Donald Glover, who voiced Miles in Ultimate Spider-Man on Dixney XD, unfortunately won’t be returning to the role, though he does get to be in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Perhaps Moore has a younger sounding voice.
In addition to the casting of Moore, Liev Schreiber is on board as the yet to be announced villain. It’s super safe to assume he will not be reprising the role of Sabertooth from X-Men Origins: Wolverine, for rights issues and the fact there are plenty of better villains in Spider-Man’s own rogue’s gallery. Plus, why would they even want that? I only bring it up because Schreiber has superhero experience. So, if I had to pick a character for Schreiber to play, I’d say Kraven the Hunter!
Phil Lord of Lego Movie, 21 Jump St, and Han Solo movie fame wrote the project and is producing it with his usual co-director, Chris Miller. Bob Persichetti will direct alongside Peter Ramsey.
