Milly Alcock And Meg Donnelly Test For Supergirl In Superman: Legacy

Filmmaker Craig Gillespie is in talks to direct Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow for the new DCU.

According to THR Milly Alcock and Meg Donnelly both test for the Supergirl role in Superman: Legacy and follow up Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The trade says that Supergirl will first appear in the soon to be filming Superman: Legacy from writer/director James Gunn. Whilst we already knew that Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow was in development, this would mean having to lock down the casting soon.

As per the trade;

‘The search for Supergirl is one step closer to completion. Screen tests for the role took place yesterday, according to several sources, with the field now narrowed to two actresses.’

‘Milly Alcock, best known for her work on HBO’s Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, and Meg Donnelly, who starred in Disney Channel’s hit musical franchise Zombies and who voices the character in recent and current DC animated movies, both tested in Atlanta, per sources. DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran were present.’

That means one of Alcock or Donnelly will play Kara Zor-El in the DCU.

‘Supergirl, who would headline her own movie, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, after being introduced in Gunn’s own Superman movie, Superman: Legacy, is a key component of that plan.’

One would assume Supergirl is not a major component of Legacy. After all, Kara has her own movie coming up and the casting being left this late indicates a smaller role. Previously James Gunn has said not to expect Kara to just be a female version of Superman.

“Superman is a guy sent to Earth and raised by loving parents, where Supergirl, in this story, she is a character raised on a chunk of Krypton,” Gunn explained in a video released on social media when the slate was revealed in January 2023. “She watched everybody around her perish in some terrible way, so she’s a much more jaded character.”

As for the actresses in question, I have seen a little bit of both. Neither are obvious choices for me based on what else I have seen them in. However, that’s kinds what acting is, and why Gunn always prefers to test actors out.

Alcock I’ve seen in two TV series, and the one that impressed me most was House of the Dragon. Alcock is brilliant in that show, but it’s an extremely different role to that of Supergirl. As for Donnelly, I have a daughter so I’ve seen the Zombies movies. I’ll never choose to watch them again unless for the love I have for my child. Not my kinda movies. However, they don’t allow much opportunity to really explore Donnelly’s acting talents. I think looks wise, Donnelly fits better, but I guess it will depend who tests best? Both the actors are 23 years old, however I think Alcock looks younger than she is.
