Mirai: New Trailer Hits For Acclaimed Director Mamoru Hosoda’s Latest Masterpiece!

Mamoru Hosoda is one of Japan’s most celebrated animation directors — at least when it comes to overseas. While his animation style is undeniably similar to many anime properties out there (though his look is unmistakably his own), the man has managed to transcend borders through his universal stories.

If you’ve been following his work, you’ll notice there are some pretty consistent themes throughout, the most prevalent of which is the importance of family. Throughout films like Summer Wars, The Boy and the Beast, and Wolf Children, the bonds that keep people tied together play a huge role. He’s capitalized on this, and as a result, his films are much more accessible than much of your standard anime fare (though his tendency to skew towards furry-esque character designs has been noted), and allowed his name to sit alongside the likes of Hayao Miyazaki.

His latest film, Mirai, brings those universal traits to the forefront once again, and are ever present in the new trailer.

Below is the official synopsis for Mirai:

“From acclaimed director Mamoru Hosoda (Summer Wars, Wolf Children) and Japan’s Studio Chizu comes MIRAI, a daringly original story of love passed down through generations. When four-year-old Kun meets his new baby sister, his world is turned upside down. Named Mirai (meaning “future”), the baby quickly wins the hearts of Kun’s entire family. As his mother returns to work, and his father struggles to run the household, Kun becomes increasingly jealous of baby Mirai… until one day he storms off into the garden, where he encounters strange guests from the past and future – including his sister Mirai, as a teenager. Together, Kun and teenage Mirai go on a journey through time and space, uncovering their family’s incredible story. But why did Mirai come from the future?”
