UPDATE: The studio has since sent us a synopsis for the film that helps to explain the subtitle “Fallout.”
“The best intentions often come back to haunt you. MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT finds Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team (Alec Baldwin, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames) along with some familiar allies (Rebecca Ferguson, Michelle Monaghan) in a race against time after a mission gone wrong. Henry Cavill, Angela Bassett, and Vanessa Kirby also join the dynamic cast with filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie returning to the helm.”
ORIGINAL STORY:
Later this July, we will get a chance to revisit Ethan Hunt and his mission impossible-ing compadres in Mission: Impossible 6. But, of course, despite the fact that we’ve been calling it that for the past couple years, we knew it was only a matter of time until we got the legit title for this one.
Now, Tom Cruise has taken to Instagram to share the new title for the film, and it is called…Mission: Impossible – Fallout. Check out the image reveal below:

I like it. It’s quick and simple, though a bit of a departure from the two-word subtitles we got from films like Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. We can’t help but wonder what the name could possibly mean. Are they dealing with a nuclear threat this time around, or does “fallout” have to do with the ramifications of some action taken by someone? Given the overall scope of these films, we’d go with the former, but we’ll have to wait and see on that front.

That wasn’t all Cruise had to share on Instagram. Each Mission: Impossible film has a set-piece stunt that becomes the heavily-advertised moment: Ghost Protocol had him climbing a skyscraper, and Rogue Nation had him strapped to the side a plane. Here’s what may very well be that stunt for this film.

Yup. Looks like Cruise is taking another page out of the Rogue Nation playbook with this one. But will this be the big set-piece stunt for the film? I hate to say it, but I hope not, as we’ve seen people clinging to helicopters pretty consistently in films. Regardless, you gotta respect the dude for continuing to do a lot of his own stunts at his age.
