We’re currently living in an age where there are way too many blockbusters out there to count. We’ve seen movies like Solo seemingly get buried under the rubble of other solid big-budget films, but even before that, there were other casualties. One such casualty was last year’s Power Rangers movie — a solid, if not flawed, interpretation of the original series I grew up knowing and loving.

The movie ended up making $142 million worldwide, and given its $100 price tag, that just wasn’t going to cut it. It seemed like a given that at least this interpretation of the films was dead, and that anything else would likely be a solid 5-10 years away, and would be vastly different. However, as we reported weeks back, Power Rangers was recently purchased by Hasbro, and with it, we can likely expect new films, right?

Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner recently spoke at the Hasbro Strategic Decisions conference, and while there, he said the following:

“As I mentioned, we’ve now announced the acquisition of Power Rangers. This is really a great statement about where we believe we are in developing our brand blueprint. The fact that we can acquire Power Rangers brand and plug and play that right into our strategy where we activate it in entertainment, motion pictures in the future and then of course across toys and games and consumer products and do so globally. We felt the brand was very under leveraged and undervalued. We feel we can exploit it to a much greater extent and it was a great opportunity to acquire the brand.”

So he mentions “motion pictures” in his statement, and we can’t help but wonder in what capacity and how soon this will happen. Power Rangers continues to be a huge brand, and if done right, it’s possible that it could very well be another cash cow…but would they start over from scratch or continue off that first film? Would they actually be able to start over without confusing audiences?
