More ‘Sanderson Curiosities’ Like Way Of Kings Prime Likely On The Way

Want more of the Brandon Sanderson Curiosities? You may get them!

Earlier this year, Brandon Sanderson surprised many fans when he announced he would be releasing The Way of Kings Prime. This wasn’t just a first draft of The Way of Kings — it was a completely unique first take on the concept that he wrote years prior to the one we know now. It features different characters, a different plotline, and a wholly different feel. You can pick up an ebook version of the novel on his official site where it is labeled as “A Sanderson Curiosity.”

Brandon Sanderson himself has been very open about the early stories he wrote, as well as about his first take novels. But, does that mean we can actually get our hands on some others down the line as well? As if Sanderson isn’t doing enough releasing roughly two books a year these days, it sounds like we’ll be able to get our hands on some more Sanderson Curiosities down the line.

“Yeah. Response to Way of Kings Prime was strong enough that I would at least like to release in hardcover form the ‘good ones.’ The good books from A Sanderson Curiosities are White Sand, Aether of Night, and Dragonsteel. They are all of an equivalent quality, as in slightly worse than Elantris. Maybe significantly worse, but of a similar sort of problems. They are all good enough books that I don’t think you’ll waste your time reading them. They are just not good enough books that I’d want to mass release them.

“So I would imagine we do one of these per Stormlight Kickstarter. The Stormlight Archive books are just a big enough thing and require big enough funds and things, that we’ll probably continue to do one of those every three years.”

But what about beyond those two? After all, The Stormlight Archive will ultimately be ten books long. Will he be willing to dip back into his lesser quality books for Kickstarters beyond the next three?

“After that, we go down another jump in quality. We have Mistborn Prime and Final Empire Prime, which are probably the next two in quality, where they aren’t bad books, I think they’re readable, but they’re a further step away from what ended up being my vision…then after that we have another big dip in quality. You get things like Star’s End, which was my second novel. You get things like Knight Life…”

Sanderson then discusses a Cyberpunk book he did before Elantris, but seemed unsure how that one would measure up to his current standards. Beyond that, he stated he doesn’t expect them to release his early early books. Given that Sanderson has always been open about the idea of using the first 13 or so books as practice for his career, it’s not a surprise that he’s so non-precious about his early stuff.
