Mortal Engines Featurette Teases The Beginning Of A Saga

I want to like Mortal Engines. Good lord, I want to like it. Not since the original Lord of the Rings film do I think there has been such an engaging fantasy world for audiences to steep themselves in. Sure, we have plenty of movies with fantastical elements, but you could count the number of good fantasy films on one hand, in terms of the ones that create their own world.

But I have to say, they seem to be screwing the pooch with a lot of their marketing. I can’t put my finger on it, but something about their marketing has felt lifeless and soulless — like they’re trying to sell us on what we want but completely missing what it is we’re looking forward to. Now, the studio has released a new featurette, and while I don’t think it completely nails it, I think it is a tad closer to what I was hoping to get.

In the featurette, they really emphasize this new world — a world that we’ve never seen before. Given the talent behind this thing, I certainly hope they’re bringing in what they’ve learned to bring an unforgettable experience…but so far, I’m not seeing it just yet…

Below is the official synopsis for Mortal Engines:

“Hundreds of years after civilization was destroyed by a cataclysmic event, a mysterious young woman, Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar), emerges as the only one who can stop London — now a giant, predator city on wheels — from devouring everything in its path. Feral, and fiercely driven by the memory of her mother, Hester joins forces with Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan), an outcast from London, along with Anna Fang (Jihae), a dangerous outlaw with a bounty on her head.”
