Mortal Kombat Reboot Gets A Release Date, And It’s A Long Way Off

There have been a lot of Mortal Kombat media projects. The game franchise has been on the big screen (unfortunately two times), small screen, the interwebs, and even had a series of comic books. The first film made was, as far as I can remember, fun for a 10-year-old but actually a terrible film. The sequel was even worse. However, in 2010, a short film called Mortal Kombat: Rebirth from director Kevin Tancharoen gave fans hope for a well-done film. This version of the series was more grounded and had a more realistic feel to it while maintaining the sci-fi and supernatural elements. That short-film spawned the mostly well-recieved web series, Mortal Kombat: Legacy.

At any given moment in the last 20 years, there has been a new Mortal Kombat film being pitched, shopped, or otherwise attempting to get started. Now it seems that someone finally took the bait and a film is heading to pre-production in Australia this month. James Wan, who is becoming a go-to guy in Hollywood, is set to produce the film for New Line Cinema, which is a subsidiary of WB.

There is a release date set now, and unfortunately (maybe fortunately) it is two years away. Mark your calendars for March 5th, 2021 and get ready for Kombat! It’s not uncommon for a film to take two years to get made. We often hear movies announced and have a release date in a year but those have usually already been in pre-production for a while and the production company just sat on the information.

Being two years away means there will be plenty of time for visual effects, sound mixing, and of course reshoots. There’s always reshoots. As for what story they will be telling, no one knows. I really hope for a traditional Mortal Kombat story that involves Shao Khan invading the earth realm and a team of well-trained fighters goes to stop him. I know that there’s a tournament in the mythology, but who would agree to a tournament for the fate of the planet? Does Khan go to the U.N. and bargain with them for a time and place?
