Mulan To Get Down To Business With $85M Opening

Mulan never ceases to be an interesting film to cover. On one hand, you have the exhaustion many fans seem to be having over these Disney remakes, and on the other, you have the fact that this looks like it’ll be substantially different. And then you have the previous controversial political statements from its star Liu Yifei. Finally, you have the more recent coronavirus scare, which has led to a Disney delaying it in certain markets, likely including China.

This has led to a lot of speculation surrounding the film losing money. After all, it has an astounding $200 million budget — the largest ever for any Disney live-action adaptation to date. Does that mean this movie is in trouble and could lose the House of Mouse hundreds of millions of dollars? Of course, that remains to be seen, but it does seem like the film is well on its way to doing pretty solid business.

According to early tracking, the film is set to debut in the U.S. with $85 million or more. This is slightly lower than Aladdin’s $91.5 million domestic launch, and that movie went on to break $1 billion worldwide — even with only around $53 million from China. I say that because, while the coronavirus may have decimated the Chinese market, that’s not to say that Mulan has to be a failure.

In fact, some bullish trackers are anticipating the film break Aladdin’s domestic opening. And if the movie is great, who knows how high the eagle can fly. As of this writing, the U.S. box office doesn’t appear to be affected by the coronavirus. That being said, I personally anticipate that could change in the weeks to come. In many colleges, spring break is approaching, which will see students go home and come back to school, potentially leading to a spread.

But, of course, that’s all speculation. Like most people, I hope that we can get a handle on this thing and that lives aren’t too negatively affected. Mulan is a secondary concern, but it is unfortunate how the timing rolled out on this for Disney. Who could have anticipated that their most Chinese-friendly film would be released under such a pandemic? Nadie, that’s who.
