Mulan is coming to Disney+?

Mulan has been delayed several times over the past several months. The COVID-19 pandemic. Our own James Burns had a chance to see the film in the weeks leading up to its release, but he never got a chance to review it. For months, we wondered if it would ever be released. After all, studios seemed too scared to experiment with a VOD release. Would they ever push out a big blockbuster into their streaming service? Well, it sounds like they’re finally doing it!

In a Walt Disney Company earnings call, CEO Bob Capek revealed that Mulan would finally be released onto Disney+ after several delays. But don’t expect it to just pop up on their service for free. If you are already a subscriber to Disney+, you will be able to watch the film on demand for $29.99. It will also release in theaters that are open at the time.

Personally, I’ve been eager to see them actually experiment with a PVOD release of a big blockbuster movie. If they do well enough, can we perhaps see them use this release strategy for other films going forward? Maybe…Black Widow? Well, not so fast.

“We are looking at Mulan as a one-off as opposed to saying there’s a new business windowing model we are looking at,” Chapek stated.

In other words…don’t expect them to use this strategy for films like Black Widow. Of course, that can all change. If Mulan exceeds all expectations, we could see Disney shifting to this strategy on the regular. But, it’ll all depend on how this one goes. It didn’t sound like they were eager to commit to anything, but money certainly talks. If Mulan makes hundreds of millions in their Disney+ launch, I don’t see why they wouldn’t continue that trend until the pandemic blows over. Heck, maybe even beyond that.
