When it was revealed that the fan-favorite character Shang wouldn’t be making the transition from animation to live-action, you could hear the fangirls weep. In fact, if you listen now, you could probably still hear their sobs. But if you were sad that they were perhaps ditching the idea of a love interest altogether, fret not. Disney will make sure to have that love interest box checked.
In fact, according to THR, Disney has just cast New Zealand actor Yoson An (The Meg), who is of Chinese descent, as the character of Chen Honghui. Honghui is described as “confident and ambitious recruit who joins Commander Tung’s unit. He becomes Mulan’s most important ally and eventual love interest.” The outlet then goes on to make the distinction that confirms that yes, this character will indeed be different from Li Shang.

Also joining the film is Chum Ehelepola will be playing Ramtish in the movie. Mulan is directed by Niki Caro, and the film, which is set for an August shoot date in China and New Zealand, is scheduled to hit on March 27, 2020.
