In one of the most well-known shipwrecks in history, the Endurance was lost at sea in 1912 during an exploration near Antarctica, leaving all the shipmates fighting for survival on the desolate continent.
In a race against time like the original Endurance, an Endurance22 expedition embarks on an Antarctica trip in 2022 to discover the wreck before the ocean freezes over and meets the same fate.
Here is the official synopsis:
In a legendary feat of leadership and perseverance, polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton kept alive his crew of 27 men for over a year despite the loss of their ship in frigid pack ice. Over a century later, a team of modern-day explorers sets out to find the sunken ship. From National Geographic Documentary Films and directed by Chai Vasarhelyi, Jimmy Chin and Natalie Hewit, Endurance tells the inspiring stories of these two landmark expeditions, bound by their shared grit and determination.

LRM Online’s Gig Patta spoke with director Chai Vasarhelyi about merging the two expedition stories as a parallel race against time. We also discussed reenacting the scenes of the 1912 crew, AI voice creation of the 1912 crew reading their journals, and the filming of the 2022 expedition crew seeking the shipwreck.
Chai Vasarhelyi is an American filmmaker who often makes riveting documentaries with her husband, Jimmy Chin. In 2019, they won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for Free Solo, which profiled Alex Honnold on his free solo climb of El Capitan. Other notable documentaries in their filmography include Meru, The Rescue, Return to Space, Edge of Unknown with Jimmy Chin, and Wild Life. Her first feature directorial film with Chin was Nyad, starring Jodie Foster and Annette Bening, and it was about the real-life swimmer Diana Nyad.
Endurance streams on Disney+ on Saturday, November 2.
