Neill Blomkamp’s Alien 5 Pretty Much ‘Totally Dead,’ Director Says

Yes, I know, it’s like we have a serious case of infinite deja vu, isn’t it? It was only last month that we reported that Alien 5 was dead. However, film fans are a persistent bunch, and it certainly doesn’t help that Hollywood is one of the most fickle industries out there. There’s always a chance for something to take off, even long after it’s been confirmed as dead.

For those who have no idea what I’m talking about, before Ridley Scott went to work on the now-released Alien: Covenant, Chappie and District 9 director, Neill Blomkamp was doing some preliminary work on Alien 5, a film that was going to undo Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection, and go off in a completely different timeline. However, before we knew it, Alien: Covenant started gaining momentum, and Alien 5 was put on the back burner.

For a long time, Blomkamp stayed silent on the status of the film, and last month, he mentioned that there wasn’t even a script for the film before it was set aside. Now, in an interview with The Verge, in addition to discussing his follow up to District 9, Blomkamp seemed to put the final nail in the coffin when he was asked about Alien 5:

“I think it’s totally dead, yes. That would be an accurate assumption at this point.”

It’s a shame, given what the film ultimately could have been, but at least Alien: Covenant was a solid film. That being said, the movie didn’t do so hot at the box office, taking in $173 million worldwide on its $97 million budget. We’d be surprised if the movie manages to make its money back at this point. With that in mind, it wouldn’t be the greatest of shocks if the franchise as a whole was also dead for the foreseeable future.

But again, Hollywood is ever the fickle beast, and as such, it’s almost impossible to predict if and how an existing property will make a comeback.
