Netflix Pushing Ahead With Assassin’s Creed Show

An Assassin’s Creed show is in development from Netflix. The Assassin’s Creed series is part of a deal between Ubisoft, who own the Assassin’s Creed IP and Netflix to develop content based on their various video game franchises. The deal between Ubisoft and Netflix will include live-action, animated, and anime series. The search is currently on for a showrunner for Assassin’s Creed. Ubisoft Film & Television’s Jason Altman and Danielle Kreinik are set to serve as executive producers.

Check out the statement below, courtesy of Variety.

“For more than 10 years, millions of fans around the world have helped shape the Assassin’s Creed brand into an iconic franchise,” said Altman, head of Ubisoft Film & Television – Los Angeles. “We’re thrilled to create an Assassin’s Creed series with Netflix and we look forward to developing the next saga in the Assassin’s Creed universe.”

“We’re excited to partner with Ubisoft and bring to life the rich, multilayered storytelling that Assassin’s Creed is beloved for,” said Peter Friedlander, vice president of original series at Netflix. “From its breathtaking historical worlds and massive global appeal as one of the best selling video game franchises of all time. We are committed to carefully crafting epic and thrilling entertainment based on this distinct IP and provide a deeper dive for fans and our members around the world to enjoy.”

Assassin’s Creed certainly has potential as a long form TV series. The recent movie starring Michael Fassbender was trash to most fans, including me. However an Historical drama questioning the beginnings of Humanity with lots of assassinations and sword-fighting? It’s hard to say no if done well, don’t you think?

This is a further foray into fantasy for Netflix as well. Netflix already has The Witcher, but has also acquired the rights to the Conan the Barbarian IP. Fantasy is the next big thing coming after the success of Game of Thrones. Amazon has The Lord of the Rings and The Wheel of Time shows coming. Disney has also recently announced a Willow TV series for its Disney+ service.

We’ll be seeing a lot of fantasy shows soon, I just hope the hit rate is high. I do have the feeling that one of these upcoming fantasy shows will be a disaster.  However, I will keep my fingers crossed I’m wrong on this one. I hope Assassin’s Creed, and all the other shows I mentioned are roaring successes. After all I’m a fan of this genre.
