Netflix Takes Over Beverly Hills Cop 4

Though it has been one of those delayed sequels that has been discussed for so long by studio heads, producers, and the lead actor that we knew it would never actually happen, thanks to Netflix it looks like Beverly Hills Cop 4 may finally become a reality.

In a world of classic films’ sequels under-preforming — I’m looking at you Doctor Sleep, but mostly you, The Terminator: Dark FateDeadline reports that Paramount has made a one-time license deal with Netflix allowing Netflix to bring back Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy). The deal does come with the option for a sequel, giving Netflix a classic title with a big star while Paramount cashes in on revenue from a library title.

Netflix is already successfully in the Eddie Murphy game, just having released the critically acclaimed, and wonderful film, Dolemite Is My Name last month with current discussions underway to bring Eddie Murphy’s next stand up special to the streaming giant.

Netflix and Paramount have struck unique deals in the past with Netflix acquiring Cloverfield: God Particle and surprise dropping it after the Super Bowl in 2018 and Netflix getting foreign rights to release Annihilation overseas 17 days after the US theatrical release. Netflix also make a similar deal with New Line for this past summer’s Shaft film, though this new deal does not involve a finished film like the others. Rather, Netflix will act as the production studio, working with Murphy and producer Jerry Bruckheimer to land a script and director as well as financing the latest Beverly Hills Cop film.

In the meantime, Paramount is also currently filming a sequel to Coming To America, another classic Murphy film, starring the actor as Prince Akeem.
