Netflix’s Castlevania Teaser: In Darkness, A Hero Returns

For decades, fans have been waiting to see a video game movie hit the big screen in a big way. Sadly, all we’ve really have been failures and underperformers. When all said and done, it’s really hard to adapt something from a gameplay-focused medium to a storytelling medium. Each medium has its strengths, and each one is trying to accomplish a different goal. With all that in mind, it’s no wonder Hollywood has had such a hard time adapting it to the big screen.

It’s also very possible that they’ve had their sights set on the wrong medium. Perhaps the big screen wasn’t where they should have been focusing their energy. In the past decade or so, we’ve seen a huge creative boom on television. With shows like Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad dominating the pop culture zeitgeist, it became clear that audiences were willing to follow a more long form emotional journey on the small screen. Perhaps that’s the path they should be following.

A couple months ago, it was announced that an unexpected video game property — Castlevania — would be getting such an adaptation. What’s more, it would be getting an ANIMATED adaptation. One of the executive producers, Adi Shankar (who isn’t one to mince words) went on to say:

“I’m personally guaranteeing that this is going to be the best fucking video game adaptation ever made to date … I’ve seen it, and it’s f**king amazing.”

After months of waiting, we now have our first taste of the end product in the form of this official teaser. It starts off quite interestingly, with an NES front and center. Someone puts a cartridge into the console, and after coming to a select menu that comprises of other Netflix original series, we begin our descent into the animated world of Castlevania.

The actual footage is very brief, but from what we can tell, it definitely has a very anime-inspired aesthetic to it, which is quite fitting, given its source material. Sadly, there wasn’t nearly enough footage to judge fully, but it was enough to give us just enough to want more.
