New Alita: Battle Angel Poster Looks Anime As Hell

Despite the fact that it’s been hitting U.S. audiences for decades, neither anime nor manga have fully been able to hit the mainstream in a big way. Sure, you get the occasional property that does pretty well in select groups of people, but never an all-out hit that allows the medium to really explode.

Perhaps the next best thing could be a solid live-action film. Sadly, we haven’t really had a great track record with those. I’d argue Speed Racer is great, but it doesn’t feel at all like it’s source material. Hell, I’d even argue the Netflix-made Death Note was solid, but I can understand it not counting since it only resembles the source material if you tilt your head and squint.

The film that may be going the greatest lengths to really “look” anime here is none other than Alita: Battle Angel, based on the manga Gunnm, which was released in the U.S. as Battle Angel Alita. Director Robert Rodriguez took the extra effort not just to adapt this world, but to give the character the trademark big eyes look the mediums of anime and manga have been known for. Now, in the latest poster, that look could not be more evident.

Seriously, this looks like it could have been pulled straight out of an anime or even a JRPG of sorts, and I dig it.

Fingers are crossed that the movie itself is good (the trailers already have me sold), but even if it is, will most audiences go for something that looks so nontraditional? We’ll have to wait and see. But what do you think? Let us know your thoughts down below.

Alita: Battle Angel hits theaters on February 14, 2019.
