New Detective Pikachu TV Spot Includes Surprisingly Highbrow Humor

Like many other fans out there, I’ve had my fair share of doubt when it comes to the upcoming Pokémon: Detective Pikachu film. I mean, for starters, there still has yet to be a universally-acclaimed video game movie for all of us to enjoy, and that’s not even mentioning how difficult it would be to bring these pocket monsters to life in live-action form.

The first trailer managed to assuage some of my concern. Sure, these creatures still look slightly cartoonish, but the world is colorful enough that I kind of buy this almost Roger Rabbit-like melding of live-action and animated. But there was still the tone to worry about. Would this movie cater too much to the kids demographic and not enough to lifelong fans?

Well, luckily, in the new TV spot for the film, we are treated to some very highbrow humor in the form of a fart joke. That’s right, the lead character (played by Justice Smith) smells something weird, and as it turns out, Pikachu had farted, as his stomach had gotten all rumbly due to coffee. High-quality stuff!

All jokes aside, while it’s not exactly a bright, shiny example of the kind of humor I want to see, it’s still relatively harmless in how it’s delivered. We’ll see if the rest of the movie is enough to counterbalance this kind of thing.
