New Doctor Sleep Posters Pay Homage To The Original Kubrick Classic

I’ve talked about this before when the trailer hit for Doctor Sleep, oh and you can check that out again above. I was most pleased to find out that the Doctor Sleep movie was making some changes from the book so it felt like a sequel to the movie version The Shining. For example in the book, the Outlook Hotel was burned down at the end of The Shining, but as you can see is present and used in this version of Doctor Sleep.

Today we have two new posters for Doctor Sleep, with Ewan McGregor’s grown-up Danny Torrance front and center, but both with clear marketing nods to the original movie from Stanley Kubrick. Check them out below, I am sure you won’t need me to explain the references unless you have never seen The Shining, and if not, you should really watch that before thinking about Doctor Sleep.

I guess the question is, too much visual homage to the original or just enough to make sure audiences know this is a sequel to The Shining? It’s a fine line, but I understand it from a marketing perspective, like making sure RDJ was front and center on the Spider-Man: Homecoming poster.

It’s been a long damn time since I read either The Shining or Doctor Sleep, these days I am far more familiar with the movie version of The Shining, not only because I own it on DVD, but because many of the key moments have been immortalized in pop culture and copied endlessly. I mean how many times have you seen a door being broken down by someone on TV or in film and they put their face to the door as Jack Nicholson did in The Shining? For me, Kubrick’s original is a classic, and though Stephen King will hate this, I much prefer it to the book version.

I’m looking forward to seeing Doctor Sleep, though I am not sure if I will get the time to catch it at theaters, I hope I do.
