Check out this new Foundation trailer which reveals the premiere date on Apple TV+. Foundation is based on the series of novels by American sci-fi author Isaac Asimov. The book initially consisted of a trilogy, Foundation, Foundation and Empire, and Second Foundation. However in later life Asimov also wrote two prequel books, and two sequel books for the series.

Given the content of the trailer below, I think we can assume this is Foundation being adapted, the first book in the original trilogy. The premiere date is September 24th of this year on Apple TV+.

I won’t spoil the story anymore than what you see in this trailer. The basic premise is that there is a Galactic Empire that rules over the entire Milky Way. Richard Harris’ character is a mathematician who devises a new science called psychohistory. This new science can predict the future of the Galaxy itself, and it doesn’t predict anything nice. The Empire will fall, and a dark age lasting 30,000 years will engulf the Galaxy until a second Empire arises.

Harris’ character Seldon comes up with a bold plan to reduce that dark age to as little as 1,000 years. I’ll leave the rest until you watch the TV series, or read the books. Considering Asimov’s originally trilogy was published in the 1950’s, perhaps now is the perfect time to pull it off without it bankrupting the studio. Digital effects and various other new technologies have severely reduced the cost of adapting this Galaxy spanning series. However, don’t expect Star Wars here. After all, Asimov has no problems with a darker outlook on the future of the Human race.

As yet, nothing has encouraged me to try out Apple  TV+, despite me having some free access trial time to use. However, I my well use that up once the full of Foundation Season 1 is released and check this out. I’m not a massive fan of the books being adapted here, in fact I have only read the original trilogy. However it was a long time ago I read those and I am keen to see how a TV series would perform.
