While the Marvel Cinematic Universe in its entirety is quite the creative beast, one franchise in particularly may trump the others in terms of its overall strangeness and spirit of high space adventure. Of course, I’m talking about Guardians of the Galaxy, the franchise about a band of galactic misfits who band together for the common good.

The first film introduced us to many cool visuals that included an entire base made from the head of a celestial skull — along with many other things that were only the stuff of dreams and cheap sci-fi paperbacks until recently. Vol. 2 is bound to up the ante in many respects, especially now that the studio now knows that they have the good faith of the fans behind them. One of these crazy new things may very well have just been revealed via a piece of concept art released from Empire.

Check it out below!

What an age we live in that we may very well get to see a creature like this realized on the big screen. It looks like some cross between a kraken and Falcor from the Neverending Story. While we don’t know what this creature is exactly, or why the Guardians are up against him, it sure looks like it’ll be a hell of a lot of fun to see in theater. True to the style of the first film, it looks like the battle scenes in this one will have both serious action and plenty of comedic flair, as evidenced by the adorable baby Groot at the bottom left of the photo.

What do you think of this concept art? Let us know your thoughts down below!

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5, 2017.
