Jack Ryan is coming to Amazon Prime streaming service on August 31. From what I’ve seen so far in trailers and shorter promo’s like this above have left me feeling some trepidation for this show.

I’m a huge fan of the novels by Tom Clancy, which center around the Jack Ryan character. I have read them all, even the newer versions which focus more on Jack’s son. The films were fantastic representations of those books until The Sum of all Fears. This was the movie where they decided to replace Harrison Ford with Ben Affleck.
Now it’s got nothing to do with Affleck himself you understand, the problem with the movie was they used it to completely reboot the character and the franchise. The fact that Paramount did this and still tried to follow the basic story of the novel The Sum of all Fears by Clancy was another huge error. The novel was set directly after Clear and Present Danger, which was also the last movie starring Harrison Ford. It just made no sense, and it has pained me watching this franchise be mishandled since.
After continuing mis-steps with the franchise, it’s movie theater life has ended and now Amazon Prime are taking a crack at doing something with it in TV style streaming format. When I first heard of this I thought this was exactly the medium these stories needed. My issue and trepidation about this show is that Amazon have chosen to set this in the modern era. I think this is a serious mistake, due to the nature of many of the novels being set deep within the Cold War. My worry in the modern setting is that Amazon wont be able to write as good yarns as Clancy did himself and the plots Clancy told were very much of their time.
But as fan of the franchise, I am willing to check this out come August and I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt to impress me with Season 1. I sincerely hope I am being paranoid and this is a winner.
