New ‘KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE’ Poster Teases Character’s Return

Without a doubt, KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE was a film that easily landed in my top five favorite films of last year. It was fun, action-packed, irreverent, and had one of the best villains I’d seen in a movie in a long time. The cast was amazing, and above all else, it was a perfect vehicle for relative newcomer Taron Egerton, who absolutely nailed the role.

Admittedly, KINGSMAN isn’t a film that really needed a sequel, but when director Matthew Vaughn signed on to continue the franchise, few felt the impulse to complain. Vaughn was responsible for the already-stellar first film, so who’s to say he wouldn’t continue that trend?

Now I know you’re here for a poster, but before I go any further, I feel compelled to give some sort of spoiler warning, as I doubt you’ll understand the poster without having seen the first film.

So SPOILER ALERT for the first KINGSMAN film!

.

In the first film, Colin Firth’s character, Harry, gets shot point blank in the head by Sam Jackson’s character, Valentine. Since the sequel was announced, there were rumors that Vaughn was planning on bringing Firth back to reprise his role, but some time back, he revealed that they’d be continuing without the character Harry, essentially saying there was no way to incorporate him into the story they were trying to tell.

In a surprising move, this first poster seems to indicate that Harry is alive and well.

Check out the poster below.

As you can see, the image has Harry’s broken glasses sitting on the well-known Samuel Clemens quote, “Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.”

I’m torn on this. If you’d asked me if I’d wanted to see Harry return to the franchise, I’d say “of course, but he’s dead. So there’s no way I want to see him, because it can only be done in a stupid way.”

But upon seeing this poster, I can’t help but be a bit excited. The image is beautiful, impactful, tongue-in-cheek, badass–it essentially encapsulates the tone of the first film perfectly. With all this in mind, I’m willing to put my logic quibbles aside and just enjoy the darn movie.

What did you think of this image? Do you think Colin Firth’s character will be making grand return in KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE? Let us know your thoughts down below!

KINGSMAN: THE SECRET CIRCLE hits U.S. theaters on June 16, 2017.
