New Lonely Island Comedy ‘POPSTAR’ Gets Red Band Trailer!

The Lonely Island is definitely a group with a specific brand of humor. You either get it or you don’t, and while it definitely seems to work in their albums and many digital shorts, one has to wonder if their mix of music and humor will translate well to a feature film, which has been kept secret throughout its entire production. The film, now revealed as a mockumentary of sorts (though it’s unclear if it’ll stay that way for the duration of the film), is called POPSTAR: NEVER STOP STOPPING, a title whose redundancy fits in very well with the comedic sensibilities of the comedy band.

Take a look at the trailer below!

“Universal Pictures’ Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is headlined by musical digital-shorts superstars Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, collectively known as The Lonely Island. The comedy goes behind the scenes as singer/rapper Conner4Real (Samberg) faces a crisis of popularity after his sophomore album flops, leaving his fans, sycophants and rivals all wondering what to do when he’s no longer the dopest star of all.

The latest comedy from blockbuster producer Judd Apatow (TRAINWRECK, SUPERBAD, KNOCKED UP) co-stars Sarah Silverman, Tim Meadows and Maya Rudolph and many of the biggest names in comedy and music in cameo performances. Co-directed by Schaffer and Taccone and written by The Lonely Island trio, Popstar is also produced by Rodney Rothman (producer of GET HIM TO THE GREEK, FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL; co-writer of 22 JUMP STREET), as well as Samberg, Schaffer and Taccone.”

While the idea of a mockumentary following a douchey pop star sounds pretty great, one has to wonder if it’ll grow tired after a while. Admittedly, when watching this initial trailer, the novelty didn’t take long to wear off. Let’s hope the jokes will able to keep this paper-thin concept afloat. I’m a big fan of the Lonely Island and Judd Apatow, and among them, I think they have the talent required to make this one a slam dunk.
