Say the word “horror” and the first word I think of next is “sequel.” Yes, we live in the age of franchises, where sequels hit left and right, but we can’t forget the genre that originally epitomized the idea of franchises — and that’s horror. Before Marvel was doing it, the likes of Freddy, Jason, and countless other baddies kept returning time and again. And that’s because audiences love to come back to get scared differently…but similarly…
So it was no surprise when Paranormal Activity first hit it big that we got a sequel…and then another…and then another… and then another…and then another. It was all part of the laws of horror, and like others, it faced diminishing returns with each passing installment. It’s been a few years since the last film hit, so that means it’s overdue for a reboot, right?
While at CineEurope, Paramount CEO and chairman Jim Gianopulos shared that the studio was developing another chapter in the Paranormal Activity franchise. But that’s not all. Here’s what else he said.
“We are partnering with uber horror producer Jason Blum to bring a new installment of Paranormal Activity.”
That’s right. One of the masters of horror over at Blumhouse — the same guy who Universal is entrusting with The Invisible Man — is set to resurrect this dormant franchise. I’d say this is pretty solid news. Sure, the franchise itself may be a bit tired, but if we can get a tried-and-true producer overseeing it — one who knows exactly what horror fans want — then perhaps we can see them turn things around.
