We love our nostalgia. The current state of blockbusters is proof of that fact. And yet, more recently, the box office has proven that mere nostalgia for the sake of nostalgia will rarely work. It has to actually be good, quality nostalgia. One example of that is the 2015 film Creed. Creed is a film that, by all means, should have been terrible. It was a way to capitalize on a franchise that had been dormant for about a decade — and it was set to pass the torch onto a new lead, all while paying homage to the films and hero we know from the past six Rocky movies.
Somehow, they managed to make it work. It had an authenticity to it that was unmistakable. Of course, it opened up the floodgates to other story possibilities in Creed 2. Some weeks ago, Sylvester Stallone revealed that one of these possibilities would be explored in the sequel. Rather than go off into completely new territory, they would be bringing back Ivan Drago, the main villain in Rocky IV who kills Apollo Creed, Adonis’ father.

There are few details regarding what Drago’s role will be in the film, but there are a couple possibilities. Based on the initial post from Stallone, where he had the caption “sins of the father,” it seemed to imply that Drago’s son would be involved to make amends for his father killing Apollo Creed. Another traditional route could be simply that Drago is training a new boxer, and that that’s how both Rocky and Adonis will come to terms (once again) with the death of Apollo.
