One of the most terrifying movie premises of the year has surfaced with the release of the first teaser for Whalefall, an upcoming survival thriller that asks a chilling question: What would you do if you were swallowed alive by a whale?
The newly released teaser offers audiences a glimpse into the harrowing journey awaiting Jay Gardiner, played by Austin Abrams. Set against the waters of California’s Central Coast, the film follows Jay as he embarks on a deeply personal mission after the death of his father.
While diving in search of his father’s remains, Jay’s quest takes a nightmarish turn when he is swallowed whole by a massive sperm whale. Trapped inside the creature’s belly with only one hour of oxygen remaining, Jay must confront both his physical circumstances and the emotional baggage he carries from his complicated relationship with his father.
As Jay’s oxygen dwindles, the lessons and wisdom passed down by his father become more than memories, they may represent his only chance of making it out alive.

The teaser leans heavily into the film’s claustrophobic atmosphere, emphasizing the impossible odds facing its protagonist. The simple but effective tagline, “The odds of being swallowed alive by a whale are not zero,” sets the tone for a story that balances realism with extraordinary circumstances.
Austin Abrams, known for his work in projects such as Wolfs and Euphoria, takes center stage in what could be one of his most demanding roles to date. Meanwhile, Josh Brolin’s presence looms over the story even after his character’s death, serving as the emotional anchor for Jay’s struggle to survive.
Combining the isolation of survival films with a unique natural threat, the movie appears poised to deliver both intense suspense and a deeply personal story about grief, family, and resilience.
Whalefall opens exclusively in theaters on October 16.
