I’m admittedly torn. Don’t get me wrong. I love me the idea of a J.R.R. Tolkien biopic. Like many of you, I adore the films (and the idea of the novels…but they were always a bit too light on character for me), and would find the prospect of getting in Tolkien’s head pretty amazing. What better way to do that than with a biopic?
I’m sure that’s the folks over at Fox Searchlight were thinking with the upcoming movie Tolkien, starring Nicholas Hoult in the titular role of J.R.R. Tolkien, the creator of Middle-Earth and The Lord of the Rings. But in spite of how much I am looking forward to this, I do worry how pandering it will be. A human being is more than bits and pieces culminating in the most well-known work he’s ever produced, and part of me is worried they’ll try and condense a nuanced life into “how everything in my life contributed to Lord of the Rings.”

Below is the official synopsis for Tolkien:
“TOLKIEN explores the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school. This takes him into the outbreak of World War I, which threatens to tear the “fellowship” apart. All of these experiences would inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-Earth novels.”
