Nightflyers will be arriving across multiple platforms for Syfy beginning on December 2nd. The show will instead be shown by Netflix outside of the US, but we have no confirmation on when the show will start airing on the streaming giant overseas. In fact a quick search still has the international Netflix release dated as Autumn 2018, unless anyone has a DeLorean handy and 1.21 gigawatts, then I’m guessing that’s changed just a tad.

Nightflyers is based on the novella of the same name by Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin and was adapted once before (badly) in 1987 in a movie of the same name. The show so far seems to be following more closely to the tone of Martin’s original work and the trailers certainly have piqued my interest.
Now of course, as you can see above, Syfy has released the first 5 minutes of the opening episode to viewers on YouTube.
Interestingly this opening scene seems to be chronologically much farther along in the show, a sort of flash-forward if you will as we then learn about the events which preceded this confusing and rather violent opening. It’s a technique used many times before and it really does set the tone for what Martin himself describes as “Psycho on a spaceship”.
I have not read the novella, though I am aware of the rough plot of the story during research I did around Martin prior to this being announced. This definitely looks like a tension filled psychological drama and whilst I am definitely going to watch this when it eventually hits Netflix, it already feels like a show to take one episode at a time rather than a binge watch. There’s only so much tension a person can take in the one sitting after all.
Of course, who knows how I will feel once I start watching, you can never truly tell which shows will hook you into a binge cycle until you begin.
