Nintendo Switch Sold Nearly 20 Million Units, But Investors Fear A Decline In Demand

Nintendo has just released its earnings for the first three months of the fiscal year, with numbers ending June 30. According to the Japanese video game console manufacturer, they have sold 19.67 million Switch Consoles since its launch last March, which is no small feat. Given these numbers, they are well on their way to eclipsing GameCube’s entire run of 22 million units by the end of this year.

But it’s not all quite sunshine and roses, despite these great numbers.

Nintendo predicted recently that they will be selling 20 million starting April of 2018 and ending March of 2019. As of this writing, they have only sold 1.88 million units after the first three months…meaning it’s on track to make less than 8 million in the same period. Of course, this isn’t accounting for the holiday season, and the first half of this year has been pretty sparse in terms of releases. With Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on its way, along with Pokémon: Let’s Go, we can see why they’re so ambitious. But will it be enough?

According to CNN, investors are still wary about the system, with a US hedge fund betting against the company, which led to their stock dropping 3.5%. Jefferies Group predicts that demand for the Switch will decline and that the system will sell only 15 million units in the same period Nintendo is pushing for 20 million.

But, of course, Nintendo has never been a predictable company. With a Nintendo Direct likely on the way, that demand can change at the drop of a hat. Who knows what secret games they have up their sleeves apart from those big ones for the end of the year?
