No More Star Trek Movies? Paramount Debunks Recent Rumor | LRM’s Barside Buzz

UPDATE: No more Star Trek movies? Is the end nigh? Not so fast! Paramount has confirmed to Screen Rant that the below rumor is false.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Star Trek is a little franchise that could. Okay, it may not really be that small, but it’s no Star Wars. Even at its most successful, it hasn’t been able to pull anywhere the same numbers as Star Wars in the film department. No matter how much money and action they threw up on the big screen, audiences weren’t able to make the franchise click as an adventure film series. Star Trek Beyond’s failure really cemented that, and Paramount has struggled to get back into theaters ever since.

We’ve seen a few different films struggle along the way. We’ve seen Star Trek 4, a time-traveling story with Chrises Pine and Hemsworth. There was the canceled Noah Hawley Star Trek flick. Finally, there was the Quentin Tarantino movie, which could have shown the franchise in more of an R-rated light. Now, if we’re to believe a rumor from our friends over at Giant Freakin Robot, we may not get any of those movies.

“Paramount is no longer in the business of making Star Trek movies,” the outlet’s source wrote. “They see it more as a television property and aren’t willing to invest in future Star Trek movies anymore. If one of the shows on CBS takes off that could change, but those shows aren’t generating enough interest.”

Recent years has seen CBS go all-in on Star Trek on the television front with shows Discovery, Picard, and Lower Decks. However, in spite of this, there hasn’t been much momentum on the film front. If we are to believe the outlet’s source, the future of the franchise could be restricted to television.

I have to say, based on what I’ve heard from those who really love Star Trek, that’s totally fine. Their interest tends to be primarily with the shows anyway. Throw too much money at the series, and it just turns into Star Wars, right?

As much as I enjoyed those movies, I think this makes sense from a financial standpoint. It’s never been a box office juggernaut, and from the sound of it, it’s not exactly catching fire on television either. That’s not to say its role on TV is in danger though. As we know, the standards for a TV success and a film success are night and day, so it could just be a matter of how successful those shows are.

So, should we believe the rumor? I’d make sure you have some grains of salt handy. While Giant Freakin Robot has gotten stuff right in the past, including Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, this is only one source. If you’re getting information from just one place, there’s always a possibility of misinterpretation. As such, I’d wager there’s a kernel of truth in here, but plenty of room for doubt.
