No, Taika Waititi’s Star Wars Film Is Not Cancelled – We Think | Barside Buzz

Director Taika Waititi explains why he's out of Thor 5 but confirms he's still writing his Star Wars movie.

You may have seen some rumors regarding this, but no, Taika Waititi’s Star Wars film is not cancelled. At least that’s what we think and it is where most of the Barside Buzz is leaning. This all began with some comments made recently by Waititi. The writer/director joked that Shawn Levy will have finished his script for a Star Wars film before Waititi does. Waitti began quite some time ago, hence the joke.

Waititi presented Levy with an award at the Toronto Film Festival and this is what he said.

“Once he’s had his way with that [Deadpool] franchise, like a cruel and indiscriminate virus, he’ll move on to another, and another, and another. And then eventually, probably Star Wars. And unlike me, there’s hope he actually manages to finish the script for that.”

This caused a slew of speculation that Waititi’s film was canned. There has been little update on this movie for a while after all. The last we heard, Kathleen Kennedy said Waititi didn’t have a third act, but they would give him the time he needed to finish his script.

However, then we had Daniel RPK make a claim, or pass on what he heard on his Patreon service. The claim was that Waititi’s Star Wars movie was cancelled. I’ll not say anyone would be hugely suprised if this turned out to be the case.

Yet, far as I can tell, most other insiders believe that the movie is still in development and has not been canned.

BSL, who is an insider I know has good Lucasfilm links (because his information has matched ours in the past) says this is not the case.

Meanwhile Jeff Sneider claims on the recent The Hot Mic that as far as he’s heard the movie is still in development and ‘not dead’.

Given their past leaks, I am more inclined to trust BSL and Sneider who have genuinely had information proved to be correct before anyone else. Also, it’s worth noting Daniel RPK’s Patreon is a mix of anything he has heard, not just the things he’s been able to get verified from multiple sources.

I have nothing to add in terms of our own contacts, but my feeling on this is that the movie is still in development. Yet, it would also not surprise me if either Waititi pulled out, or Lucasfilm got fed up waiting. There also seems to be a set of fans who think Waititi’s career is over because they didn’t like Thor: Love and Thunder. I mean, Ragnarok or Love and Thunder are not Waititi’s only successful ventures people. Also recall that it was Waititi who directed The Mandalorian Season 1 finale, and that was one of Season 1’s best episodes.

So, no, Taika Waititi’s Star Wars film is not cancelled. At least that’s what we think and where most of the Barside Buzz is leaning. Feel free to comment on this story below as always.
