You’ve probably seen all the speculation, but the truth for now is, no, Xbox is NOT going the way of SEGA but they are selling games to the competition. You can of course check out the full presentation below with Xbox boss Phil Spencer and some of his team. However, the truth is, they don’t have too much to say. It’s obvious this was set up just to prevent any more wild speculation. Namely that Xbox would leave the hardware market and become a software only company. Hence, go the way of SEGA. However, if you want the cliff notes, keep reading.
So, are Xbox games going to become multi-platform?
Yes, some selected games that are currently only available through Xbox or PC are going to be made available to Switch or PS5 owners. The games are so far only four and are unannounced. However, the Barside Buzz says it’s older games the likes of Sea of Thieves. What will not be coming to competition any time soon as the likes of Starfield or the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. There are currently no plans for these titles to be sold multi-platform, which was rumored.
There are also no current plans to bring Xbox Game Pass to Nintendo Switch or PS5.
Secondly Xbox are not moving out of the hardware industry.
“There’s some exciting stuff coming out in hardware that we’re going to share this holiday,” said Xbox’s Sarah Bond. “And we’re also invested in the next generation roadmap. And what we’re really focused on there is delivering the largest technical leap you will have ever seen in a hardware generation, which makes it better for players and better for creators and the visions that they’re building.”

For players, it feels like each console generation ow is a smaller tiny leap that it was in the past. Who for example can forget the jump to N64 and Playstation from the SNES and Megadrive era. I’d also add the jump from Xbox/PS2 to Xbox 360 and PS3 was a huge one. Most fans who keep an eye on how good PC’s are right now reckon Bond is incorrect with this one, but we shall see?
An Xbox handheld has also been rumored but so far there’s no official line on that. Spencer had said previously they were closely monitoring what Nintendo was doing with Switch. Well. the insiders say one is in development, but again, that’s just a rumor for now.
So there you have it folks, Ignore the rumor mill on this one as no, Xbox is not going the way of SEGA. And yes, whilst they will be selling games to the competition, they won’t be the new titles. Hopefully one day Sony/Nintendo and Xbox can all trade games between them for access to other exclusive titles. Especially older games that are no longer console sellers. However, I doubt it will ever happen.
