Have you heard of The Untamed? Or what about publisher Stranger Comics? If not, chances are you’ll be hearing more about them soon. With an HBO series in development and a modern twist on high fantasy, Stranger Comics is one indie publisher I got to check out during NYCC. Read on for my interview with Stranger Comics Chief Creative Officer Darrell May.

LRM: Can you introduce yourself to the readers of LRM Online?

Darrell: I’m Darrell May, Chief Creative Officer and art director for Stranger Comics.

LRM: Thanks. Your sign says the writer for Asunda will be here.

Darrell: Sebastian Jones is really tied up right now in California writing the pilot for the HBO series on The Untamed.  Unfortunately, he’s not going to make it. He was going to be here today and the weekend, but he couldn’t make it.

LRM: The Untamed, did you do the artwork in the book?

Darrell: I did the pencil layouts on it. And then Peter Berting, an artist out of Sweden who draws Baltimore for Dark Horse comics is the main artist on the actual Untamed series. There’s Sinners Prayer and The Killing Floor. And him and I and Sebastian are currently working on Volume Three Issue One Still A Fool.

LRM: Nice. How’d you get involved with the project?

Darrell: I met Sebastian Jones creator of the world of Asunda when I was nineteen. I’m now forty-one. We’re good friends. We met playing Dungeons and Dragons. So, we wanted to create a high fantasy franchise that is multicultural. I love The Lord of The Rings. It’s just very European in its context. I wanted to have a high fantasy that reflects the world you and I live in.

LRM: What can you tell the fans of LRM Online to look out for next?

Darrell: Tell them to check out The Untamed, and that’s at Strangercomics.com. Then I have a bunch of other titles. Niobe is another very popular title for us because it’s her spinoff series from The Untamed. And we have new books on the horizon. Still A Fool Volume Three of The Untamed. We have Assesa in production. And we have Morkamore Rise of the Jade Lord in production.  And the final issue of Niobi She is Death is being completed right now. We just ended a massive Kickstarter on She Is Death for hardcovers.

LRM: So, we’ll be seeing this on HBO soon?

Darrell: Hopefully, yes.
