Octopath Traveler Is Highest-Selling Game For July 2018

Who’d’ve guessed that the top-selling game for the month of July of 2018 would actually be a game that harkens back to the JRPGs of old, when pixels were blocky and turn-based was the preferred mode of combat. I know I’ve always been a personal cheerleader of old-school turn-based RPGs, but I never thought it was something that would ever rise above niche levels of interest. Now, it looks like I’m not the only one.

According to the market research company NPD Group (via Variety), the Nintendo Switch-exclusive game Octopath Traveler is the bestselling game of last month, marking the second month in a row that a Nintendo-exclusive has hit No. 1 in the charts. In fact, half of the month’s top 10 bestsellers are Nintendo exclusives, which is pretty cool.

“Nintendo Switch is the only platform showing year-on-year growth in full-game dollar sales with gains of nearly 70 percent when compared to a year ago, despite digital sales on Nintendo platforms not currently being tracked by The NPD Group,” analyst Mat Piscatella told the outlet “Year-to-date sales of full-game software on Nintendo Switch have more than doubled when compared to a year ago.”

That’s pretty good news for Nintendo fans, and even better news for us JRPG fans. While we knew that the game was selling well (thanks to tweets from the developers), it’s a bit validating to see it do such numbers that it’s helping Nintendo actually grow in the months down the line.

Unfortunately, specific figures for the game and for Nintendo’s system weren’t given, but all seems to be going well. Will it be enough to help the console creator reach sell 20 million units — which is the number they set out to hit? Probably not, but we can dream.
