As awards season start, many films are campaigning for the eyes of the Academy Awards. One of the films, Serbia submitted Dara of Jasenovac as their entry for the consideration. And, it’s a good one.
Based on a true story, the feature film tells the untold story through a young girl named Dara on the lives taken at the Holocaust-era concentration camp at Jasenovac. Any time of Holocaust story certainly brings tears to the eyes and controversy on re-living the atrocities of this dark period in history.
The film stars Biljana Cekic, Anja Stanic, Zlatan Vidovic, Luka Saranovic, Jakov Saranovic, Simon Saranovic, Sandra Llubojevic, Nikola Radulj, Rajko Lukac, Vesna Kljajic Ristovic, Nikolina Friganovic, Igor Dordevic, Natasa Ninkovic, and Marko Pipic. Predrag Peter Antonijevic directed the film from a screenplay written by Natasa Drakulic.

In 1940s Croatia, 10-year-old Dara comes face-to-face with the horrors of the Holocaust-era after she is sent with her mother and siblings to the concentration camp complex known as Jasenovac. Overseen by vicious emissaries of the fascist Ustase government, the facility, the only operational death camp during World War II not created or run by the Germans, is tasked with murdering Serbs, Jews and Roma people-and re-educating the few children deemed worthy of rehabilitation. As unspeakable atrocities unfold all around her, young Dara must summon tremendous courage to protect her infant brother from a terrible fate, to safeguard her own survival, and to plot a precarious path toward freedom.
Dara of Jasenovac opens in select theaters on February 5th.
It’s amazing that 80 years later, we’re still hearing stories from the Holocaust. And every one of them is shocking to hear. Hopefully, the story of Jasenovac brings closure to that dark chapter in history.
