I think most fans would agree that The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise started off pretty darn well. We had a pretty great story, likable enough leads, and one hell of a supporting character in Captain Jack Sparrow, portrayed wonderfully by Johnny Depp. Here was a character who was calculatingly buffoonish. He had the appearance of an incompetent wannabe but with his mix of luck, charm, wit, and planning, he actually turned out to be quite the competent adversary/hero.
However, as the movies went on, Captain Jack Sparrow really started to have the same effect that many TV characters, unfortunately, fall victim to. The writers leaned into his quirky personality, and by the most recent film, he was stumbling his way through every moment mostly by accident. With Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, it seemed as though we had hit a real low point. Why not nix Jack Sparrow and continue the franchise on in a new way?
That seemed to be the way things were going. Bolstered by the unending amount of drama surrounding Depp’s former marriage to actress Amber Heard, it seemed that his days as Captain Jack Sparrow were numbered. Well, not if we’re going to believe this new rumor.
Now, granted, it comes from We Got This Covered, so make sure to take it with a grain of salt. That being said, they claim this news comes from a source that fed them accurate National Treasure and Aladdin sequel intel, both of which have been proven correct.

Anyway, according to their source, the recent support Depp has gotten from his legal battle has had some Disney execs lobbying for the actor’s return to the role. But would it be in a leading role? Luckily, no. At least not according to them. They state his part would be more of a supporting one, which is probably the right way to go. The lead in this film would actually be a female pirate, but there is no word on how Jack would be integrated into the story.
I find myself torn on this front. On one hand, I like the idea of Jack Sparrow returning in a limited capacity as a supporting character. On the other hand, I don’t trust the writers not to bring him back as the buffoon he slowly turned into in the movies. Additionally, we’ve had so much of him already that I don’t know if we really need him in a film anymore. But I’m willing to be proven wrong.
