Fans rejoiced when they found out that Psylocke was going to appear in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE, and be handled in a more faithful way than when we last saw her on screen in X-MEN: THE LAST STAND. For one thing, the relatively unknown actress Mei Melançon has been replaced by Olivia Munn, who’s got tons of geek cred thanks to her four year stint on G4’s ATTACK OF THE SHOW. For another, she’s a visual dead ringer for the role, aided mightily by the fact that she’s actually wearing her signature costume. The importance of the visuals has not been lost on Munn, who has revealed that she turned down the option to use a body double for Psylocke’s action sequences.
“That was me from the beginning to the end,” she revealed to Entertainment Tonight at the Sci-Tech Awards. “That was a really cool thing to feel like when I showed up on set I was like, “Oh wait, I can do this! Throw me onto a wire, give me a sword – I’m good!” As for why she opted to be so hands-on Munn added, “Psylocke is such a powerful, lethal character. It was important to me that I was able to do all of the stunts because the more believable it is, the better it is for the audience — and the only way to make it believable is for me to actually do it.”
So when we all sit down to see Fox’s X-MEN: APOCALYPSE in May, we can rest assured that we’re actually watching Munn do all of those stunts.
