Anime adaptations from Netflix haven’t been scoring lately. Netflix’s last anime adaptation series Cowboy Bebop, was cancelled after one season despite John Cho in the lead. Now, some people roll their eyes at the next ambitious adaptation with the enduring One Piece that spawned hundreds of episodes as an anime as well into other properties, including film and video games.
Despite the critics and skeptics, Netflix had a considerable fanfare event attended by critics and influencers with initial praise of the series after watching a couple of episodes at the Santa Monica Pier.
The series stars Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D Luffy, Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero as Usopp, and Taz Skylar as Sanji. The rest of the cast includes Vincent Regan (Vice Admiral Garp), Ilia Isorelys Paulino (Alvida), Morgan Davies (Koby), Aidan Scott (Helmeppo), Langley Kirkwood (Captain Morgan), Jeff Ward (Buggy), Celeste Loots (Kaya), Alexander Maniatis (Kuro/Klahadore), McKinley Belcher III (Arlong), Craig Fairbrass (Chef Zeff, Steven Ward (Mihawk), Chioma Umeala (Nojiko), and Michael Dorman (Gold Roger).
Here is the full description of the series:
Based on Japan’s highest-selling manga series in history by Eiichiro Oda, One Piece is a legendary high-seas adventure unlike any other. Monkey D. Despite the naysayers, I’ve been hearing that this series is very fun and entertaining—especially if you’re a One Piece fan. I’ve only seen a few episodes, and the last animated film with One Piece Film Red. The anime and manga series are full of rich history and characters, so hopefully, the Netflix series will introduce it well to some of us who are barely familiar with it.
One Piece streams tomorrow, August 31, on Netflix.
