One Piece To Film This August, Feature ‘Big Stars’?

The live-action One Piece series could film sooner than you think. It could also feature big stars!

While lots of fantasy fans have their eyes set to shows like The Wheel of Time and The Witcher, anime fans have two big properties in their sights. The first is Cowboy Bebop, but that show has been delayed due to an injury of their lead — though COVID didn’t help. The second is a decidedly more interesting prospect. It is an adaptation of the epic shonen manga One Piece by Eiichiro Oda.

The pirate-based series has been running for over 20 years now, and it’s quite the ambitious prospect to adapt to live-action. It follows a man’s adventure as he travels around the globe on his journey to become the Pirate King. I can honestly say I have no idea how this thing will actually turn out, but if we are to believe some rumors, they could be making headway.

Some new information came out regarding the Netflix series, courtesy of Production Weekly. According to them, the One Piece will start to film on August 31. Of course, this is barring any COVID-19 resurgences, which are always possible. This report is in line with comments last May from producer Marty Adelstein, who offered a September production date. While August 31 isn’t technically September, it’s damn close.

Now, let’s turn our attention to the cast. As of this writing, we have zero idea who will be playing who. We have no Luffy, no Zoro, no Nami, no Sanji, and no Usopp. However, we may have to ready our bodies for big stars, if we’re to believe the fan Twitter account One Piece Live Action News. According to them, Hawaii Five-O star Christopher Sean was asked if he was playing Roronoa Zoro. Sean’s response was that they were casting “big stars” for the roles in One Piece.

Of course, the term “big stars” isn’t the most objective one known to man. It can mean anything from A-list to those simply well-known enough to frequent TV productions. As much as I love One Piece, I don’t necessarily see stars like Robert Downey Jr., Tom Cruise, or Liam Neeson joining. I’d consider those types A-list stars, so it’ll be interesting to see what Sean means by that term down the line.

Regardless, this does all fall in line. While we don’t know if anyone has been cast yet, I’m sure Sean has heard his own scuttlebutt in acting circles about what they’re going for based on casting calls.
