One Weird Thing About The Already-Weird Animated Series Love, Death & Robots | SDCC 2019

Netflix has truly allowed creatives to take unique risks with their projects. Of course, last year, we saw the released of the Black Mirror movie Bandersnatch, bringing choose-your-own-adventure-style programming to a high-profile series in a big way. But that isn’t the only way the streaming giant seems to be experimenting.

You may recall, not too long ago, an animated anthology series from Tim Miller and David Fincher called Love, Death & Robots came out. Each episode was completely standalone and featured unique, stylized animation. One such episode was directed by Bloodshot helmer Dave Wilson, who we had a chance to sit down with at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

In our discussions, I shifted the conversation to his work on the series, wherein I mentioned his episode as “the first one.” He promptly corrected me and revealed an interesting tidbit about the show.

“You know it’s not the first one. It’s only the first one based on your viewing habits — I found out the hard way myself. I found this out because I told a friend of mine, ‘Hey, check out this new show. I did the pilot.’ And then he called me, and he was like, ‘Ah, yeah, it was cool.’ And then he started talking about it. And I said, ‘What was it called?’ And he told me, and I was like, ‘That’s not mine. I did this one called ‘Sonnie’s Edge.’ He was like, ‘Oh, I loved that one. But that was the third one I watched.’ So depending on what you may have watched before, it shuffles the order.”

Well, that was news to me. Luckily, I had indeed watched the correct episode of Love, Death & Robots, but it’s very interesting to me that Netflix can specifically rearrange episodes based on the types of shows you generally like. Oftentimes, people tell their friends to wait a certain number of episodes before deciding whether or not to go forward with it, but with Netflix doing this, it allows the show to be putting its best foot forward on Episode 1.
