Oscar Isaac Says Dune Is A ‘Wholly Different Thing’

I still have no idea how Denis Villeneuve was able to get the greenlight on his Dune adaptation. While Frank Herbert’s 1965 sci-fi novel may be a classic, on the heels of the box office disappointment of Blade Runner 2049, I was surprised the studio was willing to bet so big on his take on the novel — especially since it looks to be the same kind of slower burn that hardcore sci-fi fans love.

Or maybe Villeneuve will be willing to create something a bit more mainstream. Yeah, it doesn’t sound like it. Based on everything the director has said in the past as well as some new comments from star Oscar Isaac.

“It’s just a wholly, wholly different thing,” Isaac told EW when asked how Villeneuve compares to previous filmed takes on the material. “I couldn’t imagine anyone more suited for the tone of the original Frank Herbert novels than Denis. There are some things that are — for lack of a better word — nightmarish about what you see… There’s just this kind of brutalist element to it. It’s shocking. It’s scary. It’s very visceral. And I know that definitely between Denis and myself and Chalamet and Rebecca Ferguson as the family unit, we really searched for the emotion of it. I’m beyond myself with excitement. I think it’s good to feel cool, unique, and special.”

In the past, Villeneuve has said that the film was kind of a pet project of his, and that “the ambition is to do the Star Wars movie I never saw,” he told Fandom this past January. “In a way, it’s Star Wars for adults.”

So, what does all this mean? I expect a lot more thought and meditation to go into this than your average swashbuckling space adventure. Something that hasn’t really been tackled due to studios being too risk-averse. I can’t guarantee I’ll like it, but it does sound like it’ll be one hell fo a swing.
